This is a little talk with Nuno Braz, the Lead Vocals and Guitars from Undersave, a powerful Death Metal Lusitanian Band.

MVB: Hello Nuno!

Nuno Braz: Hell-o!

MVB: We know your band has more than twelve active years in Portugal. Tell us how Undersave started?

Nuno Braz: I think we have actually only 10 years! This project started when 3 cousins discovered the underworld of Thrash and Death Metal! We were very young at the time and we decided to learn how to play guitar and drums in order to create our own band. In the beginning we had the intention to create a Death/Thrash Metal band but after a few rehearsals we choose to follow the Death Metal path!

MVB: Why did you choose that name?

Nuno Braz: As I said above, we were very young …we thought something like Underground and Salvation. Our name tries to pass the message that only on the underground you can find the devotion and passion to extreme music.

MVB: Why André Pisco (Bass player) left Undersave in 2008 after 6 years of line up?

Nuno Braz: André Pisco was only in Undersave for one year and a few months, he joined the band after the recording of our debut EP “After The Domestication Comes The Manipulation” and played live with us several times for its promotion. André also played for other bands and had other priorities in his life; so at certain point he couldn’t conciliate anymore his personal life with the band.

MVB: And drummer Gonçalo Neves (2009) and João Miguel (2010)?

Nuno Braz: Well, we are a very active band since the beginning, we rehearse a lot and we try to play live the most we can…Gonçalo Neves doesn’t have that availability due to his professional activity! João Miguel decided left after some disagreements with the band and personal problems.

MVB: From to 2009 to nowadays, is this a new era of Undersave?

Nuno Braz: We have now a complete different line up! After a few years we finally got to play with a bass player, Diogo, which makes us even more committed to proceed our work. War Productions released our album in 2012 and by that time the band had only two members, me and Hugo (the drummer), so I had to write both guitars, the lyrics and the bass as well (this last one, together with our producer). We are now counting on Diogo’s collaboration and contribution for the upcoming album!

It’s safe to assume that the band has been through several new eras. The first one was when we recorded our first Demo, by that time we were quite inexperienced and from that moment on, we realised a little better what we really wanted; the second era came, when we recorded and released the EP and when we had to start playing live to promote it.

This was when the line up changes began, creating some moments instability and others of full stability that allowed us to enter a third era that led to our first full-length album “Now… Submit your Flesh to your Master’s Imagination” thereafter came several gigs. In our opinion, this was our most important era so far for Undersave, we played in Portugal, Spain, played with a lot of bands in different places and managed to promote our work in Portugal and other countries, some of them in other continents!

We are quite happy with what we’ve achieved so far! There’s a new chapter for Undersave now, we are already writing the songs for the second full-length album that we would like to record until the end of the year. I’m not sure if it is a new era, perhaps it is the next step for the growth of the band and consolidation of all we achieved on “Now… Submit your Flesh to your Master’s Imagination”

Musically speaking, we are going to follow the same path, sure there might be some new stuff that we may add but that’s it: the next step on the path we’re travelling. We hope new opportunities to play live come up on places we never went, lets wait and see…

MVB: The track "Infected Mind" was featured on Metal Legions which it is an underground compilation of Lusitanian bands. How important was for Undersave to be a part of this compilation?

Nuno Braz: Metal Legions was a free underground compilation that aimed to show the Lusitanian bands to the world! It was nice for us to be a part of it, especially because we were unknown in Portugal at the time.

MVB: How was the experience of working with Sergio Fontinhas in your first video clip “Now...Submit your flesh to the master's imagination”?

Nuno Braz: We have known Sergio for several years; he is the vocals from Cronaxia. When we decide to do our first video clip it was obvious that we had to work with him…we like his performance (as producer) in Cronaxia and we know what to expect from him! And after the final result we can say that we weren’t wrong!

The video was made in a simple way with few resources, the best thing about it was our commitment to the video and we think that the final result is quite satisfactory. Basically we were filmed on our garage and use some live footage of about two years of live shows. Then Sergio mixed it all together with some documentaries and films footage that were related to our songs on its theme: human mental decay. Above all, it fulfils its role, witch promote Undersave and what we do.

MVB: Undersave has a strong influence of Brutal Death Metal Old School. Talk about your favourite bands and influences?

Nuno Braz: We have a lot of influences from Death Metal to Heavy Metal to non metal bands…All of them influence our band!

From Death Metal we are influenced by: Possessed, Death, Morbid Angel, Hate Eternal, Vomitory, Dismember, Suffocation, Incantation, Nile, Deicide, Cryptopsy, Asphyx… but as I said before we listen to several other genres like grind, black, thrash, heavy, punk, crust, bands like Primordial, Rotting Christ, Pagan Altar, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Pentagram, Inquisition, Kill, and so on. If all this bands influence the songs we compose I can’t tell you, but they sure influence us.

MVB: Tell us about Lusitanian metal scene?

Nuno Braz: Portugal is a small country and above all, it’s a country where there’s not much money. We feel that in the smaller musical environments; still we have big music festivals like Rock in Rio, Super Bock Super Rock, Optimus Alive that we don’t usually attend because it involves bands that are already settled on the market and are rather known, leaving behind underground bands that have a lot of quality, with competent musicians that have no way opportunities to show their art in a bigger amount of audient; this kind of festivals as the single goal of making money and that’s it!

What I mean to say is that we can’t have bigger festivals in Portugal, like in Spain, where you can find big festivals for extreme music, like Ressurection Fest and Leyendas Del Rock, and France that has HellFest. Nevertheless we have people here that work hard to do something for metal, we have Steel Warrior Rebellion, organised on the small town of Barroselas, north of Portugal, which is the best underground festival around here: three or four days of extreme music where bands like Immortal, Hipocrisy, Venom, Pentagram, Possessed, Criptopsy, Ratos de Porão, Bolt Thrower, Origin, Decrepit Birth and many other have played. Notwithstanding there are plenty of bands that appear, others that disappear, some exist for years and the European Union allowed them to tour more freely and allowed other countries bands to pass through Portugal on their tours more easily. I think that if Portugal had a better location in Europe our bands could do more tours and be more recognized!

Some bands:

Death Metal: Grog, Dead Meat, Holocausto Canibal, Theriomorphic, Genocide, Bleeding Display,
Neoplasmah, Derrame, Dementia 13, Skinning

Black Metal: Filii Nigrantium Infernalium, Irae, Flagellum Dei, Morte Incandescente, Scarificare, Inverno Eterno, Bruma Obscura, Frost Legion.

Grindcore: RDB, Brutal Brain Damage, Grunt, Serrabulho

Thrash Metal – Motorpenis, Alcoholocaust, Inquisitor, Pitch Black.

Heavy Metal: Alkateya, Midnight Priest, Ravensire, Web, Gargula.

Doom Metal: Process of Guilt, Insaniae, Before The Rain.

MVB: Undersave usually plays gigs in Portugal. Did your band have played in others European countries? Which ones?

Nuno Braz: Yes, we played 4 times in Spain! The first one was right after the release of our fist EP in 2010, in Vigo. After the album was released we played live shows in Spain three more times: Vigo (again), Palência and Salamanca. Everything quite DIY and quite good as well! All within the spirit! In Salamanca we had a warm reception and we met a lot of people from the audience, from the bands, all from different parts of Spain, some of them quite far from the place we played on. Experiences like this will surely stay on our memories for a long time! After the release of our 2nd album we want to perform live outside of Portugal more often… This will be our target after release our 2nd album! We played a lot in Portugal, so now we want to spread our music in other countries, meet new bands and try some different beers!

MVB: In our opinion “After The Domestication Comes The Manipulation” has more rhythm changes and sounds more aggressive.  Are you agreeing with that? Is Undersave looking for a new Death Metal style with the new line up?

Nuno Braz: We don’t look for changes, all of that came as part of our evolution… I agree with you that “After The Domestication Comes The Manipulation” has a Brutal Death Metal feeling, but with “Now…Submit Your Flesh To The Master Imagination” I think we have better defined our sound and it is more mature in every way. I think that “After the Domestication Comes the Manipulation” has a lot of blastbeats which makes it more brutal, the album is more clearer, there are a lot of complex riffs and beats that we wanted to add rhythmic and time progressions, making it a little more diverse. This is the path we pretend to follow for the upcoming album that could be mixed with other subgenres of the death metal scene we like.

MVB: European Metal scene is more powerful (more bands, gigs, fests,) than American or Latin American scene… In your opinion, which metal bands, are the most representative from Latin American metal scene?

Nuno Braz: I know a lot of Brazilian bands like Ratos do Porão, Krisiun, Sarcofago, Violator, Flagelador, Mystifier, Headhunter D.C….Some bands from Colombia like Inquisition, Carnivore Diprosopus, Internal Suffering, Mortem! Pentagram from Chile, a Costa Rica Band “Pneuma” that played in 2013 on SWR, the underground festival I mentioned befores,  and many other bands!

MVB: Finally, future plans?

Nuno Braz: We are now focusing on the composition of the new album! I hope we can release it on the first half of the next year! Thanks for the interview! If anyone wants to hear our albums please check our Bandcamp: http://undersave.bandcamp.com/
Cheers!

UNDERSAVE is a Death Metal band from Lisbon (Portugal). The band started as a three piece in 2004 with Nuno Braz doing guitars and vocals, João Nascimento on the second guitar and Gonçalo Neves on the drums.

The first demo was recorded with three songs in 2005. The recording process took place at Garagem 22 studios in Almada with Paulo Vieira (The Firstborn, Namek, Midnight Priest, Alkateya, Pussyvibes, etc). “Domestication of the Human Race” was the name of the demo, and was self-released in 2005 on cd-r.

After hundreds of rehearsals and some gigs, appeared five new songs that formed the EP “After the Domestication Comes The Manipulation” [2008]. It was recorded, mixed and mastered at Brugo sound studios with Hugo Camarinha (Bleeding Display, Theriomorphic, Decayed, etc). The band once again released it, this time on a professional format.

Before the live promotion of the EP André Pisco (bassplayer) joins Undersave. After some gigs Gonçalo Neves left and Hugo Pote joins the band, Undersave gave inumerous shows in Portugal. Meanwhile André Pisco and João Nascimento left the band.

In 2011, after 1 year of composition, Undersave began the recording of the debut full-length again with Paulo Vieira at Brugo Sound Studios and Mosphit Studios. 2012 mark the release of the debut album "Now...Submit your Flesh to the Master's Imagination" and an intense live promotion! After some shows with only 2 members Undersave has now a new guitar player Daniel Pereira and continues their live promotion!

After 1 year and half of intense live promotion, Daniel Perreira left the band and Diogo Almeida (bass player) joined the band. We are now counting on Diogo’s collaboration and contribution for the upcoming album and live promotion!
