Endless Atrocity

What new fresh atrocity
Will rain down upon the earth
When the time is right
When the prophecies fulfill

Is Armageddon, apocalyptic fear
Presence of something yet unseen
Total Annihilation of mankind
Endless Atrocity... Idiocy of humanity

Mass graves, ethnic cleansing
Never ending cemetery
Flesh scarred beyond recognition
Genocidal acts, righteous slaying

Is Armageddon, apocalyptic fear
Presence of something yet unseen
Total Annihilation of mankind
Endless Atrocity... Idiocy of humanity

Irrational beliefs, oppressed, forever doomed
Enslaved by power, blinded by terror

What dwells inside the dogmas of man?
Nothing but dreams of self destruction

This is a little talk with Paolo Ortega, DEFORMITY´s drummer. He kindly answered a few question for our readers.

MVB: How the idea of the band started?
Paolo Ortega: The band started in 2.008 with Charlie and me playing Grindcore. By 2.010 Cristian joined us along with our first vocalist Leo. On that year we switched for a more classic death metal sound. The idea was and still is to create extreme music with the most vile and wretched sound possible.

MVB: Why DEFORMITY? How did you choose that name?
Paolo Ortega:
We choose Deformity as it showcases the nature of our sound: a changing fusion between classic death metal with instances of grinding brutality. We try to compose (or de-compose) with little regard for time signatures and overall structure. That’s the sickening spirit of Deformity.

MVB: In “Endless Atrocity” the guitar style of Deformity sounds similar as Obituary`s “Slowly We Rot” and the guttural voice sounds such as Asphyx and Sepultura on “Morbid Visions” and “Schizophrenia”. What represents these bands for you?
Paolo Ortega:
All three bands are definitely sources of inspiration for us. Asphyx and Obituary are legends and pillars of the genre. We are compelled to create music based on the earlier raw and crushing sound of classic death metal bands, but obviously adding some elements of our own.

MVB: Tell us about your metal influences?
Paolo Ortega: As a band, we are very influenced by the early work of pioneering Death Metal bands, with some differences for each member. I’m more influenced by Tech-Death bands like Nile, Cryptopsy, Origin and grindcore bands like Regurgitate and Last Days of Humanity. Charlie has a vast knowledge of worldwide Underground Metal and is influenced by Asphyx, Impetigo, Cancer, Corpse Molestation and Tiamat. Ana has a predilection for Classic Metal music like Death, Obituary, Pestilence, Bolt Thrower and Brutality. Cristian is more inclined for Gore and Death Metal bands like Necrophagia, Immolation, Six Feet Under, Suffocation and Cattle Decapitation.  As you can see, our influences vary from each other and joining them allows us to experiment with music trying to achieve something unique.

MVB: Talk about Metal Latin America Scene to our readers?
Paolo Ortega:Latin America gets worldwide recognition of having the underground spirit alive, as we still make a lot of noise in the shows we attend and we like fast, extreme music. Sadly, the economic situation of the region is getting worse each year, affecting how the public support local and international bands. In Costa Rica the scene is overly saturated with international shows, prompting a lack of interest in local bands. There’s still a very powerful drive for the public to attend to gigs, but when the monetary means set you back there’s only so much a person can do. Despite this fact there are still people organizing gigs and bands happy to play in a show and that’s the most important thing. Extreme Underground Metal is not about making record sales and monetary gain, is about having a good time, support the local artists and listen to really good music.

MVB: In your opinion which are the most representative Metal bands of Latin America?
Paolo Ortega:
The list is very big; Latin America has had a metal scene for nearly 30 years and in that time has produced really great bands. Thanks to Charlie I’ve come to learn a lot of bands that helped start a scene back in the day. Obviously Sepultura is one of them, but for really influential bands you have to look at the underground scene: Sarcofago from Brasil, Massacre and Neurosis from Colombia, Horgkomostropus from Honduras, Toxodeath from Mexico, Jefe de la Morgue and Christ Snacks from Panamá and even from Costa Rica I’ll say Pseudostratiffied Epithelium and Cangrena. These are just a few bands that represent old extreme metal and have influenced a lot of others in Latin America.

MVB: How Ana Gutierrez arrived to DEFORMITY line up?
Paolo Ortega:
Ana is one of the most accomplished female guitarists in Costa Rica and has a lot of experience, as she began her career in 1.995.  She knew Charlie for a long time and had supported the band almost from its inception. On 2.013 she approached us with the intention to join us and we accepted eagerly. After some months rehearsing she debuted with us on the Putrid Pile Show in Costa Rica and now is a key part of the composition and development of the band.

MVB: Talk about the experience of having a female guitar player (Ana Gutierrez) in DEFORMITY?
Paolo Ortega:
She is very talented and very hard working; on the first rehearsal she nailed almost all of our songs! As a whole we have very good humor and Ana has learned to join the team perfectly. We are currently composing several tracks with her suggestions and she managed to encourage us to keep going and keep making sick music.

MVB: What is people reaction on gigs with Ana?
Paolo Ortega:
People in Costa Rica are used with women playing rock and metal music shows but they’re always in shock when Ana plays as she is one of the very few female artists in an extreme metal band. The overall reception has been very good; I like to think that, as a country and scene, we have evolved leaving chauvinistic prejudices behind.

MVB: We know almost Latin America countries are selling “Endless Atrocity” (2.013) and it is a hard target to do that. What represents for the band “Endless Atrocity” (2013)?
Paolo Ortega: “Endless Atrocity” is our first full album. In it, we finally captured the essence and sound we are trying to accomplish with Deformity. It represents a completion, a sense of triumph and pride. We are very pleased with the result since it was planned for almost a year between rehearsals, composition and finally recording and producing. The CD is being distributed in a lot of countries in America, Europe and Asia; we also make our own sales through our Facebook page so if someone want to purchase it just let us know!

MVB: Gigs in others countries? Which ones?
Paolo Ortega:
We’ve been very lucky to be invited to Panama in 3 different occasions, performing killer shows and sharing our music with our brothers south of the border. We will be forever thankful with them. We are trying to book more shows outside Costa Rica so if anyone is interested in having Deformity in their land shoot us an e-mail to: deformitycr@hotmail.com.

MVB: How does Atheism influence your lyrics?
Paolo Ortega:
Is not that big an influence since our lyrics are based on horror stories and terror tales. Regarding the lyrics on the song Endless Atrocity, the greatest horror story, in my opinion, is religion, with so many crimes committed in the name of something false. When I wrote those lyrics I decided to focus on that negative aspect, giving the track a protest feeling, a kind of manifest denouncing the stupidity of all religions and cults.

MVB: Future plans?
Paolo Ortega:
We are working very hard on new material with a new production in mind for the late part of 2014 and we promise to deliver some really brutal and sick death metal. We have 3 upcoming shows in Costa Rica and trying to get the 4th trip to Panama City scheduled.

MVB: Anything you would like to say to close the interview down?
Paolo Ortega:Thank you very much for the support and the opportunity to share with your readers.

BIOGRAPHY

Originally a gore-grind act named Cadaver, the band comes to life in Heredia, Costa Rica in 2008 with the idea to create death metal in its most extreme sound. Inspired by sounds from Gut, Regurgitate, Meat Shits and other bands, the raw and unerving sound of grindcore was the first choice for the original members Paolo and Charlie.

After almost a year playing as a gore/noise band and with many guest members, they decided to include a new vocalist and at the same time a new guitar player. Those two new members were Leo Oral and Cristian Carmona, former members of costarican band LINFOGRANULOMATOSIS INGUINALIS.

With these two additions, the band changes its direction to a more classic death metal style with old school sound, but with some hints of their grind past. With almost 10 songs of classic sound in the line of Autopsy, Asphyx and Convulse, the band was ready to enter the studio to record their first debut album.

Since it was no longer the same band that started long time ago, DEFORMITY is chosen as a new name and so they enter Cavan Studio in Costa Rica to record “Obsessed with Death” which is distributed in tape by Murder Records and is presented in its entirety on this site.

Shortly after the recording in 2010, Leo quit the band, leaving Charlie and Cristian on vocals. The band began then a streak of successful shows across CR and two trips to Panama. A special mention goes to the show supporting death metal legends Morbid Angel. At the end of 2012 the band returns to Cavan Studio to record and edit their first CD "Endless Atrocity" which will be distributed by argentinian labels Grinder Cirujano and Southern Hellish Productions and is soon to come out of the grave.

With a haunted and malformed atmosphere inspired in terror tales, Deformity presents itself as a death metal band with the main goal to create wretched and maniacal music reminiscent of the howlings of the damned.
